The Town of Superior has been given the Colorado Lottery Starburst Award for excellence in use of Lottery funds for the Ted T. Asti Park project located in Original Superior. The park, which was constructed between 2006 and 2008, was funded in part by proceeds from the Lottery by the way of the state’s Conservation Trust Fund. The Starburst Award winners are chosen by Lottery Commissioners and winning projects are selected based on the creativity of the project, economic and social impact to the community, and whether the project achieved its goal.
The Asti Park location has long served as a community amenity for the citizens of Superior, first as a school site and then ball field, and now as a developed park amenity. The Park was developed to include the Superior Historical Museum; an arboretum showing a wide variety of trees that grow well in our climate; xeric and perennial demonstration gardens; historic privy enclosure; gravel walking paths; a picnic area with a re-constructed barbecue pit; and a restored coal cart. The entire park is seeded with natural grass.
A tremendous amount of volunteer labor and material donations poured into this project from a wide variety of sources to make this park a reality. Contributions were made by area businesses, vendors, volunteer organizations and community members alike. Over 3,000 volunteer hours were logged and included labor for the installation of plant material to the re-construction of a coal cart and privy.
Youth volunteers from Northwood Church in Keller, Texas, in conjunction with Superior’s Cool River Church, spent hundreds of hours replacing fence, clearing rock and debris, cutting and installing the soft surface trail and installing the irrigation system. Community volunteers from Superior Mustangs Youth Football and Key Bank, as well as other volunteers, donated their time to plant the trees and shrubs throughout the park. CoCal Landscape donated supervision, tools and equipment to assist community volunteers at each stage of this project. The firm also donated several trees and helped secure additional donations. Firms that partnered with the Town to contribute landscape and irrigation materials included: Green Spot, A1 Organics, CPS Distributors and Hunter Industries.
